Five Historically Significant Recent Events
|
# 1: Dr. Leon Eisenberg, hailed as "Scientific Father of ADHD", debunked popular myths regarding today's focusing drug effectivity... "Risky drugs only enable a temporary, increasingly addictive, focus 'coping' mechanism, instead of letting the brain learn how to develop its own natural resources. " Read more..... http://www.ourimaginalcells.info/dr-leon-eisenberg-debunks-popular-adhd-drug-myth.html # 2: Landmark study once recommending drugs over safer behavioral alternatives is being re-evaluated and debunked by ADHD experts, which include some of its authors... "I hope it didn't do irreparable damage...." Dr. Lily Hechtman of McGill University, Montreal. Read more..... http://ourimaginalcells.info/landmark-study-is-being-questioned--re-evaluated.html # 3: The American Academy of Pediatrics gave biofeedback and medication the same Level 1 efficacy... Studies indicate neurofeedback actually rewires brain, unlike popular coping drugs. Animal testing indicates serious risk to working memory persists long after drug use stops. "ADD diagnosis is an invention created out of self-interest and greed by pharmacuetical companies and mental health establishments." New Research Raises Questions over ADHD Drugs
".... the modest benefit was
based on poor-quality studies, leading the researchers to caution
against using the drug without careful consideration. Study author Dr. Morris Zwi, consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist, said: 6 "Our expectations of this treatment are probably greater than they should be … Whilst our review shows some evidence of benefit, we should bear in mind that this finding was based on very low-quality evidence. What we still need are large, well-conducted trials to clarify the risks versus the benefits." Cochrane Database Syst Rev. 2015 Nov 25;11:CD009885. [Epub ahead of print] http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26599576 "......a child who has difficulty staying focused and paying attention, difficulty controlling behavior, and who is hyperactive may be diagnosed with this condition. The problem is that all children may display these symptoms, albeit some more than others." After 20 years, Ritalin 'not proven' to help ADHD:
".....Although Ritalin (methylphenidate) has been the drug of choice for around 20 years to treat ADHD (attention-deficit, hyperactive disorder) in children, it’s never been proven
to work in any major independent study. All of the 185 trials, which involved 12,245 children, are flawed -- usually because the drug’s manufacturer was the sponsor -- or were too small, say researchers at the Cochrane Collaboration, an independent review group. "Methylphenidate is the drug most often prescribed to treat children and adolescents with ADHD but, despite its widespread use, this is the first comprehensive systematic review of its benefits and harms."
